Drama at Moreton is highly valued by staff and students and comprises part of the curriculum for all Year 7 and 8 students. Drama is offered in Year 9 up to Post 16 as an optional subject and is available as an option to be studied at GCSE and A-Level. Lessons take place in a fully equipped Drama studio which really enhances performance due to the professional environment. For larger scale performances the theatre is also an excellent resource that is available to the Drama department.
Achievement in Drama is outstanding and students achieve either in line with or beyond expected progress at GCSE and A-Level. Our Key Stage 3 curriculum comprises of a variety of schemes of work that allow students to develop:
• Performance skills
• Teamwork skills
• Thinking skills
• Evaluative skills
• Communication skills
• Knowledge of different theatre movements
• Knowledge of different eras of theatre
There are a number of opportunities for students to attend extra-curricular activities in Drama, including lunch time and after school classes, school productions and external visits to see live theatre around the country. As a department, there is a great deal of importance placed on students watching good quality drama, particularly in Key Stage 4 and 5 and recent visits have included trips to the Birmingham Rep Theatre and the Lowry in Manchester.
In 2016, outcomes at GCSE were outstanding once again with 60% of our students achieving a grade A or A* and 80% achieving a grade A*-C. Our A-Level outcomes were 100% A-C grades which again put us above the national average.
Many of our ex-drama students have gone on to embark on higher education and/or careers in the creative industries, teaching and drama school training.
